The Hon Lord Doherty (Raymond Doherty)

 

Lord Doherty was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Courts in May 2010 and was elevated to the Inner House in December 2020.

He was educated at the University of Edinburgh (LL.B), the University of Oxford (B.C.L. Hertford College), and Harvard University (LL.M); and was the first recipient of a Lord Reid scholarship.

He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1984, and was Standing Junior Counsel to the Ministry of Defence (Army) between 1990 and 1991, and Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Office Industry Department between 1991 and 1997. He was elected clerk of the Faculty of Advocates in 1990 and held that office until 1995. He was appointed as a Queen’s Counsel in 1997.

Between 1998 and 2001 he was an advocate depute.

He has been joint editor of Armour on Valuation for Rating since 1990 and was a contributor to the Stair Memorial Encyclopedia of the Laws of Scotland.

He has been a member of the Lands Valuation Appeal Court since November 2011. He was a judge of the Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery Chamber) between 2013 and 2020, and he was a chairman of the Competition Appeal Tribunal between 2015 and 2020. He became a reserve commercial judge in 2013, and was appointed a commercial judge in August 2014. From January 2018 until May 2020 he was Principal Commercial Judge.
