Part-time sheriffs are appointed for five years by Scottish Ministers on the recommendation of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland.
A sheriff principal may also appoint a retired sheriff temporarily when appropriate to ensure court business runs effectively. The temporary appointment may occur as often and for as long as the sheriff principal considers necessary.
