JOY HOSIE
Joy Hosie graduated from the University of Dundee with an LLB (Hons) in 1987 followed by a Diploma in Legal Practice. She trained at Dundee City Council in all areas of legal work including several flagship projects as Senior Solicitor before moving to the Central Legal Office of the NHS in 2000. In 2003, she moved to the Scottish Government where she gained legislative drafting experience and was involved in the setting up of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland amongst other projects whilst developing extensive litigation experience.
She lectured and tutored at the University of Dundee between 1996 and 2000 and gained a Master of Laws from the University of Edinburgh in International Law, European Law and Human Rights Law in 2011.
She has been a Tribunal Judge for 25 years since being appointed to the Social Security Tribunal as Legal Chair in 1999 and then being appointed as First-tier Tribunal Judge of the UK Social Entitlement Chamber and then the Immigration and Asylum Chamber. She was appointed as Legal Convenor of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland in 2008 and the Housing and Property Chamber in 2024. She has been a Legal Convenor, Duty Convener and member of the Training Committee of the Scottish Social Security Chamber since 2022.
