New President and Vice-President of the Sheriff Appeal Court appointed

Following the upcoming retirements of Sheriff Principal Mhairi Stephen and Sheriff Principal Duncan Murray, the Lord President has appointed Sheriff Principal Marysia Lewis as President of the Sheriff Appeal Court and Sheriff Principal Craig Turnbull as Vice-President

The Lord President said “I would like to express my gratitude for the diligence and assistance provided by Sheriffs Principal Stephen and Murray over the years.  The knowledge and expertise which they brought to the Sheriff Appeal Court and their sheriffdoms has been considerable.

"I am grateful to Sheriffs Principal Lewis and Turnbull for taking on the roles of President and Vice-President, I am in no doubt that they will continue to carry out the important work as their predecessors have.” 

Biographies

Sheriff Principal Marysia Lewis was appointed Sheriff Principal of Tayside, Central and Fife in 2015. Before that she served as a sheriff from 2008 and part-time sheriff from 2006. 

She graduated with an LLB from the University of Strathclyde in 1979. After her apprenticeship at Dunlop Gordon & Smythe (1979-81) she became a solicitor at Monklands District Council (1981-83) and City of Aberdeen District Council (1983-87) before moving to Ledingham Chalmers LLP (formerly Edmonds & Ledingham) firstly as solicitor and thereafter partner (1987-2008).

Sheriff Principal Craig Turnbull was appointed Sheriff Principal of Glasgow and Strathkelvin in September, 2016.  He was appointed as a part-time sheriff in 2011 and became a sheriff in 2014.

He graduated from the University of Strathclyde and was admitted as a solicitor in 1988, working for A.C.White in Ayr and Levy & McRae in Glasgow before joining MacRoberts in 1993. He became a partner there in 1997, specialising in commercial and construction disputes and health & safety and environmental prosecutions, and served as the managing partner from 2011 to 2014.
