The Hon Lord Tyre (Colin Tyre CBE)
Lord Tyre was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Courts in May 2010. He is currently a commercial judge in the Court of Session.
He was educated at the University of Edinburgh, and holds a Diplome d’Etudes Supérieures from the University of Aix-Marseille.
Between 1980 and 1983, he lectured in law at Edinburgh University and was subsequently employed as a tax editor with CCH Editions Ltd, Bicester, Oxfordshire.
He became an advocate in 1987 and was appointed as a Queen's Counsel in 1998.
He served as a part-time Scottish law commissioner between 2003 and 2009. In 2007, he was elected president of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), the representative body of the legal profession in the European Union, having previously been head of the UK delegation.
In 2010, he was awarded a CBE for services to the administration of justice in connection with his work with the CCBE.
He is a member of the Judicial Council for Scotland, and is one of the representatives of the Council on the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary. From 2012-2019 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Academy of European Law in Trier, Germany
His publications include the CCH Inheritance Tax Reporter, of which he was author and also editor until 2000, and various contributions on taxation to the Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia. He was co-author of Tax For Litigation Lawyers (2000).
